EVALUATION ACTIVITY 2 - Aidan

EVALUATION ACTIVITY 2
How does your media product represent particular social groups?
Character 1: Protagonist (Ethan) First Character Introduced.
  • Firstly we thought a male character conforms more to a convention of a psychological thriller as generally they are more powerful and dominant and usually it is typically a male character. This is why we use da male character to be shown in our thriller opening. However we initially thought of the use of a grown man to be our main character. We found this idea quiet unsuitable for the character as we had a limited choice of actors to choose from. Therefore we decided to move to a more teenage idea and used two reliable actors which we knew could play the part and get across the thriller conventions we want to be shown convincingly.
  • The social groups represented here is age. The age group our protagonist is representing is the age range of 17-20. However originally our age range was older and around the ages of 20-30. The reason we changed the age range was because as directing our thriller opening we thought that due to our age we would find it easier to relate to younger adults/teens. Secondly in terms of audience, I think that because of Ethan being the stereotypical, well dressed attractive white male he would be able to gain an audience of both male and female whom are young and old.

Below is a gif of Ethan wearing his gold chain and his bomber jacket

A similarity which Ethan relates with, is Ryan Gosling. This is seen clearly in the Hollywood film 'Drive' (Winding Refn, 2011)

Other Similarities and differences

Character 2: Ciaran (detective character), Second character introduced.

  • In addition another character we wanted to be apart of our opening sequence is an detective. Again we thought o using a female detective however we concluded to keeping it to be a male due to the stereotypical detective tending to be male. For this character we had no confusion in choosing. we knew that Ciaran was a perfect character to help Ethan represent social groups and attract an audience.
  • Ciaran is representing more of an older character, this means he is likely to attract more of an older target audience for example the age range of 30-40 year olds. He is the stereotypical white adult male you expect to see in thrillers which have interrogation scenes.

Here is a GIF of which you can see Ciaran wearing braces and taking a pen out of his ear (typical detective)

A similarity which Ciaran relates with is, Brad Pitt. This is seen from him playing a part in the film 'Seven' (David Fincher, 1995)
