EVALUATION ACTIVITY 2

                   How does your media product represent particular social groups?

Ethan (character one): Protagonist that is first introduced

This is the young male Protagonist who is introduced in the first couple of seconds in the opening sequence. Thrillers often present the world and society as dark, dangerous and corrupt and for this reason, the protagonists involved have to be different to society. The characters in thriller texts are usually are innocent victims. however, Ethan seems as if he is part of that darkness and seems like he is the antagonist making him no different to society but however this is a flash forward and the past may have caused him to change act dark and dangerous as he was innocent in the past, as portrayed in the interview.

A social group is a collection of people who interact with each other and share similar characteristics and a sense of unity. In terms of representing a particular social group, Ethan represents the social group of adolescent teens transitioning into adulthood meaning he is at the age of 16-17. this social group is usually very trendy in terms of fashion this is indicated by his pilot jacket, hairstyle and chain which is mise en scene which we used through costume. Initially, the character of Ethan was meant to of an older more experienced and mature age group thus placing him in a different social group. However, we incorporated this maturity through his cunningness, as seen when he uses his gloves when he killed someone (not shown in sequence for confusion and suspense).

Ethan very much is similer to the character Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) in the movie
Looper (Rian Johnson, 2012)

Similarities

• both of these characters have a similar dress sense both wearing, both wearing aviator jacket and a pair of jeans with a white t-shirt.

• both had an agenda that triggered them to react in violent manners, e.g Joe's (Looper) future-self came back from the past meaning his 'loop has closed' meaning he had to kill his future self but he escaped so joe has to fight for survival. On the other hand, Ethan's Girlfriend was killed.

• both are dangerous in their own way.

• they are also of the same race and gender possibly placing them in the same social group.

Differences

• joe is clearly older meaning he is more experienced and mature in comparison to Ethan.

• unlike Ethan, joe has always been a criminal from the get-go and made his money illegally.

• Ethan is seeking revenge because of the loss of a loved one while joe is only trying to save his own life by killing his future self.

Detective Ciaran (character Two): (support character) that is second introduced

This is an older male support character who is introduced a minute within the sequence after the tittle. This character is a relatively young detective. he is in the social group of white collar workers who are in their 30s.  we thought o using a female detective however from what we have seen most detectives are actually stereotypically male in most thriller and movies in general. we knew that Ciaran would be a great supporting actor as he could help Ethan represent social groups and attract an audience. Ciaran in real life is actually 17 however he looks so much older than he actually looks so he was perfect for the role its self.

Ciaran is representing more of an older character, this means he is likely to attract more of an older target audience who are within the age ranges 30-40 year olds. He is the stereotypical white adult male this type of character is usually expected to play the role of an authority figure.

Ciaran's detective character is similar to detective bony from (gone girl, David fincher) 

"female on the right"

Similarities

• both of these characters have a similar dress sense both wearing, white t-shirt with formal suit trousers. to add, they both role up their sleeves and undo their top button put both wear watches.

• they both use the same props in the detective screen both of them have a pen, coffee, and a lot of papers that are used in the scene

• they both try to fight justice

• they are also of the same race possibly placing them in the same social group and are also around the same age as each other
• .both detectives are dealing with a disappearance.

Differences

• they are both different genders.
