Evaluation question 4
Who would be the audience for your media product?
FINDING MY TARGET AUDIENCE
For the target audience of our thriller opening, we decided that would be targeting the audience of 15+ who would be both male and female. Therefore we would have a film certificate of the 15+.
The reason why we decided for this is that from my audience research, I found out firstly in my questionnaire that the genre of a 'psychological' thriller was popular and the majority of participants was around the ages of 14-21. Furthermore to make the psychological thriller more realistic for example use of blood etc and to convey many thriller conventions we knew that we could not target a younger audience.
In addition to this my research also shows that our thriller opening can appeal to a larger audience / more mature audience. This is seen in my survey below.

In addition to this, my initial idea was just to try and target the male teenage demographic however after receiving a high percentage of females taking part in my questionnaire we decided to change to targeting both genders.

My focus group gave me the initial idea of targeting just male teenagers. |
![]() |
My questionnaire shows a large percentage (41%) of females who watch thrillers. |
Furthermore I did not choose initially for our thriller for to target an older generation because firstly my audience research did not show a huge number of people above 30 did not watch thriller films. However we changed this because we thought that if we had a larger target audience, the thriller would be more suitable for everyone's needs.
Some reasons why an older demographic not watch our thriller is because
- Scenes that makes the audience 'Jump'
- Loud music that adds tension
- Shocking climax's throughout the film.
- Disturbing events/situations
Also some reasons why I did not choose a younger age group is because
- The dark scene (low key lighting) and eerie mood could scare children
- The blood on the gloves could scare children
- Jumping scenes may not be appropriate for young viewers
- Disturbing events.
SIMILAR THRILLER FILMS
'Emulsion' (Singh,2013) is a Psychological thriller about a man looking for hes lost wife. Similar you can see an interrogation scene which we have also represented in our thriller opening.
'Shutter Island' (Scorsese, 2010) is also a Psychological thriller where Leonardo Di Caprio has to investigate the disappearance of a patient there called Rachel Solando. Similarly to 'Emulsion' you can see an interrogation scene which we also represented in our thriller opening.

From these two similar films, some other key thriller conventions we knew we needed to make sure we include within our thriller to attract our audiences is (ELEMENTS TO INCLUDE):
- Music that creates suspense and match what is happening on screen
- Jump cuts / fades / dissolves
- Some action, to build up to a climax
- An intriguing plot
- Realistic sound effects for example our police sirens during the thriller opening
- Keeps you on the edge of your seat and thinking throughout the opening
- Audience wants to ask questions after watching the opening.
- Attractive / easy on the eye visuals.
